NEWSLETTER

October 2001 Nr. 1 - 04/10/01 (updated 05/10/01)

Steering Committee

With respect to the development of the project ESPERE and suggestions as the one to make ESPERE partner of the IGBP which lead to the necessity of a more democratic way to decide,
Michael Gauss and Elmar Uherek as current administrators bring in the proposal to elect a preliminary steering committee.

The tasks of such committee would be:

a) To decide about questions of common interest
b) To edit / review this newsletter
c) To develop statutes for the project and to define the goals in a more precise way
d) To discuss strategies and to prepare a new EU proposal.

We ask all supporters, members and advisors of ESPERE who received this newsletter
a) to suggest how many candidates the future steering committee should have.
b) to nominate the respective number of candidates according to your suggestion.

Candidates should be choosen either from the list of regular members or from the scientific advisory board.

Certainly, if you are interested to become member of the steering committee and/or to take care about special tasks, you are invited to announce your candidacy.

Please send the list of candidates to Elmar Uherek (uherek@espere.net) not later than the 01/11/01. The proposed candidates will be asked if they are ready for a candidacy, they may introduce themselves in a few lines in an extra newsletter and after that a secret election will take place.

Future affilation

It has been suggested by the EU evaluators (see evaluation linked to internal blackboard) and experienced colleagues to make ESPERE partner of the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme IGBP.
homepage: <<http://www.igbp.kva.se/cgi-bin/php/frameset.php>>

As an outreach project ESPERE could prepare the scientific outcome of the program for a wider public and schools, while on the other hand, the scientists should contribute to the articles and participate in a reviewing system. Please give also your opinion concerning this proposal - if you agree or not and if you have perhaps other suggestions.

Netdays -
unexpected PR

Unexpected PR and a living insight into the future of ESPERE appeared in the online magazine of netdays NRW / Germany (as part of netdays Europe programme) - forum for school projects in the Internet. The article was published in German at
http://www.netdays-live.de/netdays2001/woche2/velbert.html
Because of the common interest and since it is an excellent example of how ESPERE should work out, we provide an English version on the ESPERE server.
We thank our partner Roland Bergmann (Velbert comprehensive school) for his commitment. Perhaps a first presentation during the netdays Europe (19-26/11/2001) will be made possible.

Torino Round Table

The European Research Commissioner Phillippe Busquin presented at Torino a vision how to face the problem of a changing atmosphere in the future. The presented scheme fits well with the general ideas of ESPERE and can be regarded as support for our idea.

Structural concept for a future climate change dialogue
presented by: Phillippe Busquin (EC research commissioner)

Busquin: "This requires:
- The development of a knowledge society
- A change in the relationship between scientists ans citizens."

Round Table Discussion, Torino 18/09701

A CHANGING ATMOPHERE:
What is really being done for the climate?
Participants:
Phillippe Busquin - EC Commissioner for Research
Paul Crutzen - Nobel Prize Chemistry 1995
Marco Goldschmied - President Royal Institute of British Architects
Paolo Scolari - Environm. and Industrial Environmental Policies, FIAT

Poster Presentation

For the first time ESPERE had a poster presentation during the conference "A Changing Atmosphere" (17-20/09/01) at Torino. The 300 participants - most of them from the atmospheric chemistry community, partially already informed about the project - took along about 40 leaflets. The result was an information of the community, but up to now we could not win new members.
We thank the organisers (especially Frank Raes and Jens Hjorth from JRC Ispra) for making possible the presentation, not announced in the conference program.

The next dates

Michael Gauss is spreading information about ESPERE during a conference in Thessaloniki / Greece.

Thierry Elias already announced the conference at Evora / Portugal on the consequences of the 'Kyoto Protocol' in November.

Of some interest will be the outcome from several dates Elmar Uherek has in Germany:

09/10/2001 - Presentation of the ESPERE project at the MPI Hamburg
presentations during the meeting:
1) Presentation of the project ESPERE (E. Uherek / MPI Mainz)
(see: presentation "Visions for ESPERE")
2) Presentation of the work of the Hamburg educational sever (Dr. Kasang / HBS)
3) Presentation of the ensivioned public relation work of the IPCC (Dr. Cubasch /MPI Hamburg)
4) Discussion of the ideas of ESPERE and a co-operation of ESPERE with the MPI and the HBS, including the plans of the IPCC.

as participants are invited:

Dr. Cubasch - MPI Hamburg
Prof. Grassl - MPI Hamburg
Dr. Hagemann - MPI Hamburg / ESPERE
Mr. Kaack - school authority / GLOBE
Dr. Kasang - HBS
Dr. Luthardt - MPI Hamburg
Mr. Uherek - MPI Mainz / ESPERE

10/10/2001 - Discussion at Duisburg with Prof. Tausch concerning the possible role of didactic institutes.
12/10/2001 - Discussion with Peter Welskop (teachers online - national education server Germany) at Mainz about the concepts for an extension of the co-operation.
